Cold morning breathes icy ghosts
into the dark face of the creek
and deer raises her wet, black nose

Ink bones stand unearthed
against white January sky
against shivering mud water

January has a fever of 103.
She is golden, like the dawn
When the fauns pipe up the sun.
Trees without any leaves
Speak a dozen tongues
And the earth mother soaks in
Warm water before another storm.
She has us all fooled, that January girl,
Smiling like a June bride. She’s got something to hide.
